Official Visit to NSW

16/02/2023

The Ambassador, Wassane Zailachi concluded her official visit to New South Wales (NSW). The visit was a great opportunity to explore possible cooperative initiatives in various sectors including trade, arts and academia.

NSW possesses the highest population of any state, it is home to a multicultural population and it is an economic leader in Australia representing a third of Australia’s GDP. Roughly 64.5% of the state's population lives in Greater Sydney. Most of the Moroccan Diaspora lives in NSW.

The Ambassador had successful meetings and fruitful discussions with government officials during her visit including the Speaker of the Parliament of NSW, the Chief Justice and the CEO of Multicultural NSW. These meetings highlighted the potential opportunities between the state of NSW and Morocco and the Ambassador looks forward to delving into these possibilities during her tenure.

She also enjoyed visiting the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre where she took part in an informative conversation with the great host and Director of the Centre, Craig Donarski. The Embassy and the Center will partner to strengthen people-to-people ties by organizing events to showcase the rich Moroccan culture.

Further, Ambassador Zailachi visited the University of New South Wales (UNSW) where she was able to explore ways of enhancing cooperation between UNSW and Moroccan universities, particularly in the artificial intelligence and agricultural realms. Morocco itself is a country that prides itself on its dynamic and diverse cross-university interactions, which makes the potential partnership very promising. Australian students would greatly benefit from a collaboration between both countries, and vice-versa.

The UNSW is the 4th ranked university in Australia, and the 2nd in NSW, which makes it a strong contributor to tertiary education in Australia. The education sector is also one of the leading contributors to the NSW economy, making it a worthwhile avenue for enhanced cooperation.
