International Day of Argania 2023

Fun fact – Morocco’s Argania tree can withstand temperatures up to 50°C, and is known to help slow desertification. It has also been used in Berber medicine for centuries to treat skin conditions, rheumatism, and even heart disease. 

Today we recognise the third International Day of Argania. It is an important day for the heritage of the Argania tree, which has been described as an “ancestral source of sustainable development.” In 2014 it was even added to the Representative List of Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. 

The Argania tree holds special important in Morocco’s culture. It is a means of contributing to food security, empowering women, and providing to the economy. It has been estimated by the UN that the trees provide economic opportunities for three million people, many of whom are women.
