47th Anniversary of the Green March

7/11/2022

Sunday the 6th of November 2022 marked the 47th Anniversary of the glorious Green March in Morocco. The day culminated in HM King Mohammed VI launching several development projects and reminiscing on previous successful developments that are a testament to Morocco’s achievements post independence.

The Green March is historically a milestone in the process of completing the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco. On October 16th, 1975, the late King Hassan II delivered a speech on national TV and radio stations calling for a peaceful march to recover its Southern Provinces and put an end to the colonial era in Morocco. He stated, “We have to do one thing dear people, and that is to undertake a peaceful march from the north, the east, the west to the south. It behooves us to act as one man in order to join the Sahara.”

Following this, the Green March was born, and on November 6, 1975, approximately 350,000 unarmed Moroccan men and women marched to the Sahara, in an effort to protest against the Spanish occupation of the region. Finally, after almost a century of Spanish occupation, the "Madrid Accords" was signed on November 14th, terminating the Spanish presence in the territory.

Since then,  Morocco continues to work with determination and dedication to the development of the southern provinces, allowing the whole region to embrace economic and social development to become a continental economic hub.

On this occasion, HM King Mohammed VI delivered a speech on Morocco’s various development projects, which are a testament to the Kingdom's commitments to the Moroccan Sahara, in particular, the last development program for the southern provinces launched in 2015-2016 with a budget exceeding 77 billion dirhams. The program allowed for a real socio-economic dynamic, created jobs and investment opportunities, and provided the region with the infrastructure and facilities it needs.
